Portrayal on "Spitting Image"Edit

Gorbachev was depicted a Soviet Leader in the old style, despite his reforms. The famous red birthmark on his head was redesigned by the puppeteers as the hammer and sickle of the Flag of the Soviet Union. In many sketches he was portrayed as being more rock 'n roll than the previous stuffy Soviet Leaders, but unfortunately still grooving on early rock 'n roll records from the 1950s and 1960s. In comparison with Ronald Reagan he wasn't criticized that heavily, although there was a sketch where he claimed he invented words like "perestroika" and "glasnost" simply to hide the fact that nothing actually changed. In another sketch he claimed he wanted to be open about everything that would once be censored in the Soviet press. As a result he revealed embarrassing information about himself and other world politicians, before being beaten up.

He also appeared in a Roger Moore Puppet sketch called "For your Eyebrows only" in a very similar style to Ernst Blofeld complete with a white Persian Cat and a Blofeld style speech "Welcome Mr Bond" in a Russian accent.
