Not Quite Free was a song in Series 5 of Spitting Image parodying the song "Free Nelson Mandela" by The Specials. The parody mocks the decision by the South African Government to move Nelson Mandela from Pollsmoor prison to Victor Verster prison (Now Drakenstein Correctional Centre) in December 1988.

Lyrics Edit

(P.W. Botha)

Okay everybody, I want you to clap your hands,

And those of you wearing chains,

Spitting Image - Not Quite Free

Spitting Image - Not Quite Free

From Series 5 Episode 4 of Spitting Image

Why not rattle along with this song?

(Chorus) (Backing Singers join in)

Not Quite Freeeee, Nelson Mandela

(Botha) That's the guy we're talking about

(All) Not Quite Freeeee, Nelson Mandela

(P.W. Botha)

Twenty Six years in captivity,

Now we're going to let him,

Make his own tea,

And he can have his visits,

Regularly.

(P.W. and Backing Singers)

Still basically locked up Nelson Mandela.

(P.W.) Only for his own protection.

(P.W. and Backing Singers)

Still basically locked up Nelson Mandela.

(P.W.)

Can't hear you, sing along now, really shake that thing.

Only for his own safety,

We're not just doing it for publicity, No No no,

And we meant that quite sincerely.

(P.W. and Backing Singers)

Free to do whatever we like,

(P.W.) After all, it is our country,

(P.W. and Backing Singers)

Free to do whatever we like,

(P.W.) To whom we choose,

With as much electric current as we like,

(Backing Singers)

Free to do whatever we like,

P.W. Botha is wearing a badge with the words "Anti-Anti Apartheid" on him.
