Sir Anthony Charles Lynton Blair is a British politician who served as the Labour Leader of the 0pposition from 1994 to 1997 and then-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007. During the last two years of Spitting Image, Tony Blair was the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party. A year after the show's cancellation, Blair won the 1997 general election and became prime minister.
Portrayal[]
In his debut in Series 15, Blair was normal-sized with an equally normal voice and was one of the more competent and smarter members of John Smith's Shadow Cabinet.
In Series 16, before his ascension to Leader of the Opposition, Blair was portrayed as a small schoolboy in uniform with a higher-pitched voice attempting to be taken seriously and insisting he was the leader. He was often portrayed as naive, young, nervous, flamboyant, ambitious, mischievous and theatrical, with a somewhat scatterbrained attitude and short attention span. One particular sketch in Series 16 portrayed him and the other Labour leader candidates, John Prescott and Margaret Beckett, as a family of three, with Blair as the whiny child in pyjamas who couldn't go to sleep and forced his “parents” to switch the TV to cartoons. Other sketches saw the acting leader Beckett as his schoolteacher, John Major as his “uncle” and Blair being too young for alcohol.
When he became leader, his puppet's voice returned to normal (although more hyperactive), wore a regular suit again and was given a Cheshire Cat-like smile that would occasionally switch to an even wider grin whenever he felt a sense of significance. He was now portrayed as being egotistical, bossy, fast-talking and being against Labour's old socialist policies in favour of being more conservative-leaning. He also had a tendency to act like Margaret Thatcher, referencing their similar neoliberal views, calling himself "The Iron Boy" and chanting "Rejoice!" repeatedly. In addition, he was unable to come up with new policies for Labour (despite it ironically being dubbed "New Labour"), either reusing old ones from last year or copying the Tory government.
In the revival, he appears as "Jiminy Blair", Keir Starmer's right-wing conscience and contrast to the latter's "creator" Jeremy Corbyn. In the stage show, he returns to being normal-sized and is now constantly dragged away by the Hand of History labelled "Iraq", as a reference to his legacy being forever tainted by the infamous Iraq War.
